Initiative: Growing Together – A Green Initiative

As part of the Growing Together – A Green Initiative, the Community Engagement Unit, First-Year Medical Students, and the Dubai Club for People of Determination collaborated in a tree-planting activity aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and community engagement. Through this initiative, participants worked together to plant trees, supporting green efforts while fostering inclusion and building meaningful connections between students and the People of Determination community.

Our Emirates We Plant – EEG OROC Project
Date: 23 December 2023
As part of the Emirates Environmental Group’s “One Root One Communi-Tree” (OROC) campaign, the Community Engagement Unit of Dubai Medical College for Girls (DMCG) participated in the For Our Emirates We Plant event at the Ajman National Reserve. Represented by Dr Nujood Al Shirawi and Faatimah Maryam Muzammil, the team planted a tree alongside universities and organizations across the UAE. DMCG earned this opportunity by collecting 145 kg of plastic for recycling as part of the OROC initiative. Faculty and student volunteers also contributed to the paper, glass, cans, and mobile-phone recycling categories under the supervision of Dr Dina Mohammed Salah, Dr Iman Irfan Abdeen, Dr Amina Begum, Dr Afrah Ghayoor, and Dr Nujood Al Shirawi.

The Emirates Environmental Group’s 22nd edition of the “Clean UAE” campaign

In December 2023, students and faculty from Dubai Medical College for Girls (DMCG) proudly participated in the 22nd Edition of the “Clean UAE” Campaign, a national environmental initiative led by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG). Under the guidance of Dr. Rawan Ahmed and the Sustainability Committee of the DMCG Student Union, ten dedicated student volunteers joined more than 68,000 participants across the UAE in a large-scale clean-up effort. Together, they collected 36,900 kg of waste and cleaned approximately 36.5 km² of land, promoting waste reduction, environmental responsibility, and sustainable community engagement.

COP28 UAE Student Climate Summit
Date: 5 December 2023
Students participated in activities at the Green Education Center launched by the UAE Ministry of Education in partnership with UNESCO during COP28 under the theme “Legacy – From the Land of Zayed.” The center showcased the vital role of education in tackling climate change through interactive programs, workshops, and initiatives aimed at empowering teachers and students with climate-action knowledge and skills. It also served as a platform for sharing experiences and best practices among education leaders and stakeholders.

Integration into the Academic Curriculum

The Green and Sustainable Pharmacy course aims to raise awareness about environmental sustainability within pharmacy practice. The course introduces concepts such as eco-pharmacy, pharmaceutical waste management, green manufacturing, and climate-friendly healthcare systems. Students learn the environmental impact of the pharmaceutical sector and develop responsible practices to minimize pollution and reduce carbon emissions.

The course Environmental Health and Sustainability introduce the concepts of ecology and environmental sustainability alongside the factors associated with the development of environmental health problems. Students will gain an understanding of the interaction of individuals and communities with the environment, the potential impact on the health of environmental agents, and specific applications of concepts of environmental health with proactive environmental management opportunities.

One Root One Communi-tree Campaign at DMCG

The Community Engagement Unit at Dubai Medical College for Girls (DMCG) actively participated in the Emirates Environmental Group’s “One Root One Communi-tree” (OROC) nationwide campaign promoting sustainable development and environmental protection through recycling. From January 23 to May 23 2023, DMCG faculty, staff, and students collected and recycled materials—plastic, paper, glass, aluminium, and mobile phones—to reduce waste and support sustainability ahead of the UAE’s hosting of COP 28.The plastic team successfully achieved its target, earning DMCG the opportunity to plant a tree under the “For Our Emirates We Plant” initiative. The EEG commended this accomplishment with a certificate of recognition, reflecting DMCG’s commitment to a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future.
