SDG 07 – Affordable and Clean Energy

2024

🌿 Empowering a Sustainable Future

DMU continues to embed environmental responsibility within its culture of healthcare education. Students and faculty actively engage in national sustainability campaigns and innovation programs that bridge medical science with environmental stewardship, reflecting the University’s holistic approach to linking health, community well-being, and sustainable development.

“From awareness to action – students linking sustainability to real community impact.”

Key highlights include DMU’s active participation in the “For Our Emirates We Plant – EEG OROC Project” (December 2023), a national tree-planting and recycling initiative organized by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG). Students and faculty members collected more than 145 kg of plastic along with other recyclable materials to qualify for tree planting at the Ajman National Reserve. This hands-on experience demonstrated the direct link between responsible consumption, waste reduction, and environmental restoration—core components of the clean-energy transition.

🔬 Learning and Innovation for Clean Energy

Academic programs at DMU are increasingly embedding sustainability and clean-energy concepts into the curriculum and co-curricular experiences. The Green and Sustainable Pharmacy course (2 credit hours, offered for Year 1 Semester 2 students) introduces principles of environmental management, energy efficiency, and responsible production within pharmaceutical and healthcare systems, ensuring that future pharmacists understand how sustainability impacts every stage of the healthcare value chain. Complementing classroom learning, students actively engage in innovation- and sustainability-focused events that connect theory with real-world practice.

🌎 Key Initiatives (2023–24)

§  Design-Thinking for Sustainability (Oct 1, 2024): The “Empowering Future Innovators” session introduced students to creative problem-solving frameworks that link design thinking, sustainability, climate responsibility, and mental well-being. Led by Dr. Arianna Mazzeo, an international expert in design and social innovation, the workshop inspired participants to envision healthcare solutions that reduce environmental impact, enhance energy efficiency within laboratory operations, and promote holistic well-being across communities.

  • Inclusion of Green & Sustainable Pharmacy course within the curriculum.

  • Student volunteering for clean-up and recycling drives.

At Dubai Medical University, sustainability is not an add-on—it is woven into the DNA of learning and leadership. By connecting education, research, and community partnerships, DMU turns global energy goals into local impact – one project at a time.

🌱 Strategic Alignment

DMU’s initiative toward Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7) advances three of the university’s core strategic goals:

§  Strategic Goal 1 (Values Driven): by instilling environmental ethics, compassion, and responsible culture within the student community.

§  Strategic Goal 3 (Research & Innovation): by creating knowledge and innovation around sustainability, environmental health, and energy-efficient healthcare.

§  Strategic Goal 4 (Authentic Leadership): by building partnerships and community outreach that convert research and volunteerism into measurable societal benefit.
