SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production 2025

Medicines are a resource and, once unused, a waste. DMU contributes to SDG 12 by teaching responsible use and disposal, by running its campus under the Sustainability Policy (F.6), and by researching greener pharmaceuticals.

Campus practice

DMU's five sustainability goals include cutting single-use plastic and printing paper. In 2025 the QAIE portal moved appraisals, course files, policy reviews and research ethics applications online, and laboratory chemicals and equipment are handled under the Occupational Health and Safety Environment policy (F.4).

Teaching and outreach

First-year pharmacy students, taking Green and Sustainable Pharmacy (GE707), led sessions at Aster Pharmacy and four schools on the harm caused by improper medicine disposal, plastic waste and recycling.

A pharmacy team reached the national top 12 with a plan for sustainable pharmaceutical waste management in the UAE.

In the DMU Greenhouse, students designed plant-based cosmetic products with eco-friendly packaging and labelling.
